HUDSON RIVER SHORT FILM SERIES
Director's Statement

This year marks the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's trip up the Hudson River, and throughout the state of New York, cities, towns, villages and hamlets will celebrate this quadricentennial with all manner of presentation and events this fall.

Aronson Films has partnered with WNET to create a series of at least 20 short films to help people understand New York's long connection with the Hudson River and the surrounding valley. The films will be about our deep historical, environmental and community relationship with this great river. Viewers will learn about science and ecology, weather and boats, environmental battles and the once vibrant needs of the Hudson River fishing industry; and they will meet a variety of unique characters who work and live close to the Hudson River.

It's our hope that our series, broadcast as interstitial programs on PBS stations throughout the coming year, will remind people of New Yorkers' connection to this beneficent river. The stories will help people understand that the Hudson is a main artery of New York State and for millions of people living in the Hudson Valley it is a source of livelihood, recreation and aesthetic sustenance.

We hope this series encourages people to learn more about this great waterway and its history. We want the films to motivate people to get out on the water and use it for recreation, for transport or just for an afternoon jaunt. And we want the series to build momentum and participatory enthusiasm for the many quadricentennial celebrations that will begin this fall up and down the Hudson River.

My hope is that the films remind New Yorkers of the interconnectedness our people and communities have with the great Hudson River, and that the films will encourage people to be vigilant in maintaining the pristine beauty that this river is coming to enjoy again after decades of mindless pollution of her waters in generations past.
